Old full sized (4/4) violin labeled “Joseph Guarnerius Cremonae 1748 in Kalamazoo, Michigan

$450

Violin #11 - For auction is a very nice
old full sized (4/4) violin labeled “Joseph Guarnerius Cremonae 1748”. There is
another label that says regraduated and voiced by Saunders Bros., violin makers
Toledo Ohio 9-1911. This is a nice dark colored violin with a two-piece somewhat
tiger striped back. The top is in decent condition with a nice tight grain pattern
and only one small crack under where the tail piece would be (see pictures)
that is about 1 ½ inches long. The scroll looks like it may have had mechanical
tuners on it at one time from the filled in screw holes and the bushings in the
peg holes This violin will need to be set up with new strings, but it looks like
all the other parts and pieces are there. It has a bridge marked Saunders Bros,
the sound post is in place and this violin is lined, blocked, and has inlaid
purfling. This violin comes in an old-style case that is in pretty good condition
for its age. There is also some misc. stuff with it, mostly old gut strings and
a couple of other things with dates that help give it a little provenance. The
length of this violin measures about 23 1/2” long top to bottom and the back
measures about 14 1/16” (358mm) long. This violin is a dark rich color and kind
a lighter golden-bronze in the corners with nice patina. There are some
blemishes, scuff marks, dings, and scratches most likely from use and handling
over the years. Please look over all the attached pictures for other details.
If you have any questions, please ask, I will try to respond as soon as
possible. I think this violin would make an excellent candidate for restoration
and set up. However, I am selling this violin as is, as found for parts or
repair. I think this time instead of the auction format I will try the buy it
now or best offer format and see how that goes once. This would make a good violin
to restore, re-use, re-purpose, use for an art project of some kind or whatever
else you can think of.
I have several other old violins and bows;
I am hoping to get more of these listed as time allows. So, keep watching for
the next listing, you never know what it will be.
Thank you,
